A town hall minus Congressman Nunes

Today in front of Devin Nunes’ district office in Clovis, CA, approximately 250 frustrated constituents of the chair of the House Intelligence Committee held a mock town hall to share their concerns about many issues and the lack of a town hall in our area. Nunes has been in Central California this week and has held fundraisers in several places, but he had no town hall where voters could ask about his firm support for the President.  He supported the Muslim travel ban before the courts struck it down; he does not want a special prosecutor to investigate the Trump/Russia connection; and he voted against demanding Trump’s tax returns. It is also noteworthy that Nunes was a member of the transition team and last summer raised $1 million for Trump’s campaign.

On February 17 the Fresno BEE strongly criticized Mr. Nunes in an editorial titled: Nunes’ intelligence obligations Trumped by loyalty to president.

When you look at Nunes’ service in Congress since he was first elected in 2002, he is a paper tiger – not someone with the fortitude to serve the people and get to the bottom of something as serious as the Trump administration’s friendly relationship with Vladimir Putin’s Russia before and after the 2016 election.

….Republican leaders in the Senate affirmed last week their commitment to conduct a legitimate investigation into Flynn’s dealings via the Senate Intelligence Committee that is now examining allegations of Russian influence in the 2016 elections.

Nunes? He’s steaming mad about leaks to reporters and Flynn’s forced resignation.

Like we said, the congressman – despite all of his fire-breathing rhetoric – is nothing more than a paper tiger.

Nunes’ constituents are steaming mad too:

Standing next to a cardboard version of the congressman, this woman has a clear message.

Today, in an article titled Nunes on speaker’s circuit from Bakersfield to Monterey, but not at a town hall, the Fresno BEE described the congressman’s activities in the Central Valley as being a featured speaker for “special gatherings of devoted conservatives,” some of whom paid $10,000 to sit at a special table. This information is reflected in one protester’s sign:

People lined both sides of the street to highlight issues with signs such as “ACA is here to stay,”“Dictators hate a free press,”“A free press is vital for a free people,”“Dissent is patriotic,”“Don’t repeal Obamacare,”“Hands off my heart care,”“You can Face the Nation, but not the people of Fresno, Clovis, Visalia,”“Don’t Be a Puppet.”  A student had this message:

Town halls (with or without the politicians present) are suddenly newsworthy, and several representatives of the media took notes and pictures. The event had been mentioned briefly in the Fresno BEE article today about Nunes on the speaker’s circuit.  Still, it was surprising to most of us that more than 250 people showed up to protest.

A video of the “town hall” is here, plus a writeup of the event:
